White Screen when loading a site

This is almost always caused by a plugin.
  • Turn on debug in the wp-config.php file. When doing this wrap it in a if else checking for your IP address. (Replace localhost with your actual IP)
    if ($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] == '127.0.0.1') {
      define('WP_DEBUG', true);
    } else {
      define('WP_DEBUG', false);
    }
  • Refresh the site and look at any errors that show at the top starting with the “Fatal Errors”
  • Look at the path and then disable any plugins mentioned by adding a .off to the end of the folder for each plugin using FTP or SSH.
  • Refresh the site and see if it comes back up.
  • Login to the admin dashboard fo the site and go to the plugins page.
  • Now go back to FTP or SSH and remove the .off
  • Run any updates that might be needed and then enable the plugins that you turned off, one by one. If it is a paid plugin check the developer’s site for the most recent version.
  • If the site crashes again after enabling a plugin then investigate that plugin further for additional issues.
